Day 01 : Calcutta / Paro By Druk AirBy: Intl Flight
Fly into Himalayas with Druk Air, Bhutan's National Aircarrier. The green walls of the hill known as dooars, or gateways into Bhutan from the plains climbs continually higher as the plane flies north towards the Tibet border. Silvery rivers thread the valleys, waterfalls plunge down the forested mountainsides, and to the north, the great snowcapped peaks of inner Himalayas rise into the sky. On arrival received by our representative and transfer to the hotel. Afternoon visit ; Ta Dzong, originally built as watch tower since 1967 it has been serving as the National Museum of the country and holds a fascinating collection of art, relics, religious thangkha paintings and Bhutan's renowned postage stamps. Then walk down the trail to visit Rinpung Dozng, "fortress of the heap of jewels", which has a long and fascinating history. Overnight Hotel Olathnag or similar, Paro.
Day 02 : Paro
After b/fast drive to the ruins of Drukgyel Dzong. Built in 1646 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, this Dzong has repelled several invasion by Tibetan armies. The glory of Drukgeyl Dzong remained even when it was destroyed by fire in 1951. On a clear day, one can see the commanding view of Mount. Chomolhari from the village nestled below the Dzong. Then visit to a traditional Bhutanese farm house which offers good insight into lifestyle of local people. Afternoon visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest and most sacred shrines of the Kingdom, reflecting the introduction of Buddhism in Bhutan. Evening visit to local market and take a stroll around Paro market. Overnight Hotel Olathnag or similar, Paro.
Day 03 : Paro - Thimphu By: Surface
After b/fast drive to Thimphu , the modern captial town of Bhutan situated at the altitude of 7,500ft. Enroute visit Simtokha Dzong, the oldest fortress of the Kingdom which now serves the School for Buddhist studies. Arrive Thimphu and check into Hotel Motithang or similar. Afternoon visit to Memorial Chorten, the stupa built in the memory of Bhutan's Third King who is popularly regarded as Father of modern Bhutan. Then visit Handicrafts Emporium which displays wide assortment of beautifully handwoven and crafted products. Evening visit Tashichhodzong, the beautiful medeival fortress/monastery which houses most of the government offices and King's Throne room. It is also the summer residence of Chief Abbot. Later visit to Thimphu market. Overnight Hotel Motithang or similar, Thimphu.
Day 04 : Thimphu By: Surface
After breakfast visit to Tango Monastery. Lama Gyalwa Lhanampa founded this monastery in 12th century. The present building was built in 15th century by the 'divine madman', Lama Drukpa Kunley. The picturesque three storey tower and several surrounding building were built in the 18th century by eigth desi, Druk Rabgye. Later if time permits, proceed further to Chari monastery built by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1620. A silver chorten inside the goembas holds the ashes of the Shabdrung's father. After that return to Thimphu town. Overnight Hotel Motithang or similar, Thimphu.
Day 05 : Thimphu - Punakha By: Surface
After breakfast drive to Punakha, the old capital town of Bhutan. The drive from Thimphu crosses, 3,050m high Dochula pass that hearlds the most enchanting views of Bhutan. Arrive Punakha and check into Y. T Hotel or similar.Afternoon visit to Punakha Dzong, the beautiful fortress built in 17th century by Shabdrung at the junction of Pho chu and Mo chu rivers. Evening visit to Punakha market. Overnight Y. T. Hotel or similar
Day 06 : Punakha - Tongsa By: Surface
After b/fast proceed to Tongsa via Wangdiphodrang. Visit here Wangdi Dzong, the 17th century fortress built at the junction of Punakha Chu and Tang chu rivers. Situated majestically it commands great view of surroudning valleys. Futher ahead cross 3,300m high Pelela pass, market by a small chorten and prayer flags. On arrival check into Sherubling Lodge or similar.Evening take a stroll around Tongsa bazar. Overnight Sherubling Lodge or similar.
Day 07 : Tongsa - Bumthang By: Surface
After b/fast walk by Tongsa Dzong, built by Shabdrung in 1647. It is also the ancestral abode of Bhutan's Royal family. All four Kings of Bhutan held the post of Tongsa penlop prior to being crowned as King of Bhutan. Then visit Ta Dzong (watch tower) built to defend Tongsa Dzong and surrounding valleys. After lunch drive to Bumthang. 29 kms from Tongsa cross Yutong la pass (alt. 3,400m ). Further 13 kms ahead, the road enters into a wide, open, cultivated valley known as Chumey valley. Evening free in Bumthang market. Overnight Hotel Wangdichholding or similar, Bumthang.
Day 08 : Bumthang By: Surface
Bumthang is general name given to a combination of four valleys - Chumey, Choekhor, Tang and Ura with a altitude varying from 2,600m to 4,000m. Visit to Kurje Lhakhang, one of the most sacred place in Bhutan as Guru Rimpoche meditated here. From Kurje monastery, a tarmac road heads south along the right bank of the river to the Jambey Lhakhang. Like Kyichu Lhakhang in Paro this temple is said to the first that King Songtsen Gempo of tibet constructed in the 7th century. Rest of day explore fascinating valley of Bumthang. Overnight Hotel Wangdichholing or similar, Bumthang.
Day 09 : Bumthang By: Surface
Morning visit to Tamshing Lhakhang founded in 1501 by Pema Lingpa. The monastery contains interesting religious paintings.Late see the Jakar Dzong, 'the dzong of the white bird' which houses the administrative seat of the district and is the only dzong in the country that does not containa Drukpa monastic community. Evening take a stroll around Bumthang market. Overnight Hotel Wangdichholing or similar, Bumthang.
Day 10 : Bumthang – Mongar By: Surface
The journey continues eastwards winding through more rugged terrain. The drive with spectacular views will take about 7 hours. Pass through Ura village in Bumthang region, before climbing sharply to the highest motorable pass in the Kingdom, the Thrumshingla pass - 12,465 ft. Gradually drop down to Sengor, watching cascading waterfalls on the way. The descent stops at 2,130 ft. on a bridge over the Kurichu. Ascent again through pine forests, maize fields and eastern hamlets of Mongar town. Visit Mongar Dzong built albeit quite recently, the Dzong still maintains the architectural tradtions of old Dzongs. Overnight at Shongar Lodge, Mongar.
Day 11 : Mongar - Tashigang By: Flight
This trip will take about 3 hours passing through Kori la pass (2,450m), the place market by pretty chorten and a stone wall. The first part of the journey is through a leafy forest filled with ferns. Later road descends rapidlythrough corn fields and banana groves arriving the famous zigzag of Yadi which is a recent settlement. After that follow the Gamri river until the bifurcation to Dametsi, this temple perched on top of steep hill was founded by Choeden Zangmo and is the most important monastery of eastern Bhutan. Tashigang is the centre of the biggest and most populated district in the country. Visit the Tashigang Dzong, standing at the extreme end of the spur, overhandging the Gamri river. It serves as the administrative seat for the district and part of the Dzong is occupied by Drukpa monastic community. Overnight at Kelling Motel or similar, Tashigang.
Day 12 : Tashigang By: Flight
Today take full day excursion to Tashiyangtse. Visit to Chorten Kora, the temple patterned same as Boudhanath in Nepal. Then visit Tashiyangtse Dzong, built originally by Pema Lingpa. A new Dzong was built and inaugrated here in 1997 following the old traditional architecture. Overnight Kelling Motel or similar, Tashigang.
Day 13 : Tashigang - Samdrup Jongkhar By: Flight
Tashigang - Samdrup Jongkhar road completed in 1965 and the journey takes about 6 hours. Along the way see, Sherubtse College, the only college in country founded in 1978. Also visit Zangtho Pelri Lhakhang built in 1978 by late minister of home affairs and represents Guru Rimpoche's paradise. Driving ahead reach to Khaling to visit blind school and weaving centre. Deothang, 80 kms from Khaling is the centre of Tecchnical Training college. From here the road descends fairly rapidly to the plain through a dense tropical forest with an abundance of teak, bamboo and ferns. Overnight Hotel Peljorling or similar, Samdrup Jongkhar.
Day 14 : Samdrup Jongkhar - Guwahati By: Intl Flight
After b/fast drive to Guwahati for onward program.
